Running costs and incentives

What an EV costs to run in Australia, and the taxes and incentives that apply when you buy one.
New to EVs?
How charging works, what the kW numbers mean and how far you will really get are in Knowledge. Start with kW vs kWh.
Running costs
Energy
Home charging is usually far cheaper per kilometre than petrol, and public DC charging costs more than home charging. Your actual cost depends on your electricity plan and how much you use public chargers. To work it out: consumption (kWh per 100 km) times your price per kWh. kW vs kWh walks through the sums, and Home charging explained covers what a home charger costs.
Maintenance
EVs still need tyres, brake fluid, cabin filters, wiper blades and scheduled servicing. Regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so the friction brakes see less wear. Service intervals vary by Zeekr model and model year; see the service schedules for the 7X, X and 009.
Incentives and taxes
Federal
- Novated leasing (FBT). Eligible EVs bought through a novated lease can be exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax. The details, and the thresholds, are in the finance guide.
- Luxury Car Tax. For 2026-27 the LCT threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles, which includes EVs, is $91,6611.
Not yet confirmed
RACV reports that from April 2027, EVs priced up to $75,000 keep the full FBT exemption while those between $75,000 and the LCT threshold move to 75% of the standard FBT rate2. We have not confirmed this against the ATO or Treasury. Check with your novated lease provider or tax adviser.
Road user charge
NSW has legislated a distance-based road user charge for EVs that starts on 1 July 2027, or earlier if battery EVs reach 30% of new vehicle sales3.
State rebates
The Victorian EV purchase subsidy ended in 2023, and the NSW EV rebate and stamp duty exemption ended on 31 December 202323. Stamp duty and registration rules differ by state:
