Stamp duty

EVs pay standard NSW motor vehicle duty. The NSW EV stamp duty exemption and the EV rebate both ended on 31 December 2023; only buyers who bought or paid a deposit before 1 January 2024 kept their eligibility12. There is no current NSW EV purchase subsidy12.

Duty on passenger vehicles is $3 per $100 (or part) of value up to $44,999, and $1,350 plus $5 per $100 (or part) above $45,000. For a new car it is worked out on the price paid including GST3. As a rough guide, a $57,900 car pays about $3,200 and a $72,900 car about $3,950. Check the Revenue NSW calculator for your price.

Road user charge from 2027

NSW has legislated a distance-based road user charge for EVs. It starts on 1 July 2027, or earlier if battery EVs reach 30% of new vehicle sales, and the government says it "will replace motor vehicle duty over time"1. The NSW Government is assessing what the Vanderstock High Court decision means for the charge1. Rates have not been confirmed, so we don't quote them.
